Whelping - The Main Event
Its time. Puppies are coming. What do you do now?
Calcium is important. It keeps the uterus contracting, important now, and it keeps momma happy, healthy, and sane after whelping.
In mammals, calcium allows the uterine muscle to slide past and shorten, resulting in effective uterine contraction. Low blood calcium leads to ineffective contractions and nervousness, and easily leads to puppy loss.
Eclampsia in dogs (milk fever, hypocalcemia, or puerperal tetany) is a life-threatening condition associated with a drop in blood calcium levels. In most cases, this condition develops in nursing dogs after giving birth. It often becomes apparent very quickly and can happen anytime during nursing even when puppies are weeks old.
Give Calcium after each puppy born, and daily until all puppies are fully weaned.
